Artist Bio
Kathrine Cays is a fine artist working in mixed media, acrylics, drawing, pen & India ink, non-traditional and traditional book making, photography, and leather work. As an emerging artist Kat’s work has been featured in over 20 exhibits, and is represented in public as well as private collections. She is currently teaching studio drawing and encourages her students to create stories about their work. She is continuing to make non-traditional books, and do leather work.
In her current body of work, Kat's explores social interaction that has led her to investigate the way individuals transform over time. The mountain settings and deserts where she has lived, and traversed, bring nature to the forefront of her work, as well as influence her choice of materials. She interprets this body of work as individual landscapes of role-play and transformation.
As a non-traditional student, Kathrine received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She studied Creative Writing with poets Al Maginnes and Betty Adcock.
Kathrine was The FRIENDS of RICKMAN STORE’s Artist- in-residence from January 2011 through January 2012. While there she collaborated with nonprofit administrators to create Community Arts Programs, she developed and presented her own education based art programs on location, demonstrated artistic methods to the public and taught poetry writing through the Arts Council of Macon County.
Kat won two first place awards and one second place award in poetry competitions while at Wake Technical Community College (2004-2008). She placed in the Anthony Abbott Poetry competition in 2007, and her poem A Clement Touch was published in Only Connect, the 2007 Charlotte Writers' Club Anthology. In 2008 she received a scholarship to Wildacres Writing Workshop in Little Switzerland, and in 2010 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill acquired Selah II, a 36 x 48 inch multimedia canvas, for their permanent art collection.
